Peter Hooley Named America East Men’s Basketball Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – University at Albany men’s basketball shooting guard Peter Hooley earned America East Men’s Basketball Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year honors, the league announced on Wednesday.
Hooley posts a 3.51 GPA through five semesters with a double major in journalism and psychology. He garnered Capital One NCAA Division I Academic All-District First Team honors in January, becoming the fourth straight Great Dane to do so.
On the court, the sophomore was named the America East Tournament Most Outstanding Player after averaging 23.7 points per game in three games en route to the league title. He was the first sophomore to win MOP honors in 15 years. Hooley also boasted a field goal percentage of .489 and a three-point shooting percentage of .522 across three tournament games to lead the Purple & Gold to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
In UAlbany’s quarterfinal win over UMBC, Hooley netted 30 points to become the first player to score 30 points in a tournament game since 2011. In a semifinal upset of No. 1 seed Vermont, Hooley tallied 22 points in the first half, the largest first-half point total for a Great Dance since 2007.
Hooley led the 2013-14 Great Danes with 15.5 points per game. He finished the season ranked first in the league in minutes played (35.1 mpg) and second in free throw percentage (.852) as well as scoring (15.5 ppg).
In addition to his AE Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors, the sophomore was an All-Conference Second Team and All-Academic Selection. He earned a spot on the All-Rookie squad a year ago.
Hooley is the fourth Great Dane to be named the America East Scholar Athlete of the Year. He joins Joe Vukovic (2001-02), Brian Lillis (2007-08) and Logan Aronhalt (2011-12) as the other UAlbany men's basketball student-athletes to win the award.
With a tie in voting, the guard shares the award with Vermont senior Luke Apfeld.
