Women’s Tennis Drops Two America East Matches Over the Weekend

ALBANY, N.Y. – University at Albany women’s tennis (9-11, 1-2 AE) was swept by Stony Brook on Friday and fell 5-2 at Binghamton on Sunday. The Great Danes drop to 9-11 on the season and 1-2 in the league with less than two weeks before the America East Tournament.

In a rematch of last season’s league final, Stony Brook started off strong and didn’t let up at the Varsity Courts on the UAlbany campus. The Seawolves handily took the first two doubles matches 8-4 before Cheryl Kukkonen and Alba Sala prevailed 8-7(6) in a tiebreak in the No. 1 spot.

After Stony Brook earned wins in No. 4 and No. 1 singles, Mireille Hermans and Kirsten Scott went to tiebreaks in the first set of their respective matches in the No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Both slid 7-6 in their first sets before Stony Brook closed out the second set 6-1 in each match.  The Seawolves won by default in No. 6 singles and the No. 5 match did not finish due to rain.

In Vestal, the Purple & Gold swept doubles. The Scott-Cathryn Crummey tandem and the Paulina Torres-Hermans team took the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches 8-5. Alba Sala and Kukkonen completed the doubles sweep, 8-7(5). Sala and Kukkonen are now on a six-match winning streak on the No. 1 doubles circuit.

The Bearcats won the first two singles matches at No. 6 and No. 3 handily, but Sala took a point back for the Great Danes in the No. 5 match, 6-4, 6-1. Binghamton went on to win the remaining singles matches.

UAlbany concludes the 2014 regular season with NJIT (8-7) in Newark on Tuesday before facing Asa College as home on Friday, April 18.
