Hermans Wins Singles Flight to Lead Women’s Tennis at NJIT Invitational



NEWARK, N.J. – The University at Albany women’s tennis team concluded its fall season at the NJIT Invitational last weekend. Mireille Hermans won the Flight E singles title and the doubles tandem of Alba Sala and Cheryl Kukkonen took the Flight 2 doubles title.

Hermans downed St. Joseph’s Sarah Contrata 8-6 in a first set tiebreak, and carried that momentum into the second set, rolling 6-1 to win the title match.

In the doubles competition, UAlbany teams of Rocio Lopez-Kirsten Scott and Alba Sala-Cheryl Kukkonen easily advanced to the finals of their respective doubles flights. Lopez-Scott defeated Keenan-Landert of Seton Hall 8-4, and Sala-Kukkonen downed Zanotta-Melibeu of NJIT 8-2. Sala-Kukkonen won the Flight 2 doubles competition 8-4 over MacDonald-Habegger of NJIT.

Sala, Kukkonen, Scott, Paulina Torres and Cat Crummey all won their opening-round singles matches. Sala defeated Kathleen Uy of Rhode Island 6-2, 6-3 before falling to Gisela Castany of Fairleigh Dickinson 6-5 (4), 6-1. Kukkonen defeated Kaila Nelson of Fairfield handily 6-1, 6-3 before falling to Nicole Chis of Fairleigh Dickinson 6-4, 6-3.

Scott and Crummey won their opening-round matches in three sets before both advanced quickly in two sets to the Flight D singles.

The Great Danes posted an overall record of 24-5 against teams from Marist, Fairfield, NJIT, Seton Hall, St. Joseph’s, Fairleigh Dickinson, Rhode Island, Saint Peter’s and Sacred Heart.

UAlbany tennis will be back in action in Providence, R.I., against Rhode Island and Brown at the end of January.
