Four Great Danes To Compete At USA Track and Field Junior Championships

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany will have four athletes compete June 20-23 at the USA Track and Field Junior National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Freshmen James Sommer, Taariq Jones, Jeremiah Obeng-Agyapong, and Aderinsola Ajala will vie for an invitation to compete on a world stage.

The Junior Championships feature athletes between 16 and 19 years of age and serves as the selection for the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia in August. The top two finishers with a world standard in each event are invited to compete as members of Team USA.

Sommer will be the first UAlbany athlete of the week to compete on Drake University’s unique blue track Thursday at 2:25 p.m. ET, running in the 3,000m steeplechase. Sommer punched his ticket to the meet after recording a qualifying mark of 9:22.52 at the America East Outdoor Championships.

Jones, a freshman from Kingston, N.Y., will contend in the 400m dash preliminary heats Friday at 2:15 p.m. If he advances, Jones will then run in the finals Saturday at 2:54 p.m. ET. Jones earned his spot at the America East Championships, winning the 400m title with a qualifying time of 47.35.

Classmate Obeng-Agyapong will compete in the preliminaries of the 400m hurdles Friday at 4:25 p.m. A native of Bronx, N.Y., Obeng-Agyapong placed second at the America East Championships with a qualifying mark of 53.34. The 400m finals will take place Saturday at 1:30 p.m., should the freshman advance.

On the women’s side, Ajala will also compete in the 400m hurdles  just before Obeng-Agyapong, Friday at 4:00 p.m. Ajala, a Piscataway, N.J. native, ran a qualifying mark of 1:00.47, good for second place at the America East Conference Championships. The finals for the event will be on Saturday at 1:38 p.m.

Sophomore Alexander Bowen narrowly missed the opportunity to compete for a USA Senior Nationals title. With six athletes tied at the 2.22m mark, the committee decided to draw the entry cutoff line at 2.23m, making a field of 17 athletes rather than 24. The USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships serve as the selection event for coveted spots to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships August 10-18 in Moscow, Russia.

Bowen, the reigning 2012 USA Junior National Champion in the high jump, earned second-team All-America honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), placing 11th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. In his sophomore year, Bowen won both the indoor and outdoor America East titles and Most Outstanding  Field Performer honors, as well as won the IC4A outdoor high jump title and raised the program record mark to 7-3.25 (2.22m).
