MacFawn's Shutout Victories Lead UAlbany Softball to Doubleheader Sweep at Boston U.

BOSTON, Mass. -- The University at Albany softball added two more wins to their conference-leading record as they defeated Boston University, 8-0 and 3-0 in a doubleheader at BU Softball Field on Wednesday, April 24. Junior Brittany MacFawn continued her sensational season with two complete shutout wins. She struck out a combined 21. The Terriers defeated the Great Danes in the 2012 America East Championship game.
After three scoreless innings, UAlbany (30-10, 13-1 AE) took control in game one. The Great Danes strung together eight combined runs from the fourth to six innings. They ended the game after the sixth frame due to the eight-run mercy rule. It was there sixth mercy rule win of the season.
The runs began pouring in with a two-RBI double by junior Lauren Alcorn with one out in the top of the fourth. One inning later, UAlbany strung together four hits and three runs to extend the lead to 5-0 after five frames. Freshman Maggie Cocks drove-in the first run with an RBI single up the middle. Junior Charlise Castro followed with a two-run double to left field.
MacFawn pitched her 26th complete game of the season. She struck out nine, walking one and allowing three hits. Senior Whitney Tutill dropped to 13-12 on the season for the Terriers. She went 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs and walking one. She struck out four.
UAlbany completed the sweep in game two, as MacFawn (21-6) again went the distance. It was her 25th complete game of the season and 11th shutout. She allowed three hits, striking out 12 and walking zero. Boston U. (17-22-1, 5-6 AE) freshman Lauren Hynes was dealt the loss. She’s now 3-5 this season. The Terrier starter went all seven innings allowing two earned runs, walking three and striking out six.
Senior Kylie Apostolina batted in the first run the game in the fourth inning. She drove-in Cocks with a sac-fly to right field. The Great Danes added two insurance runs in the sixth inning as Cocks recorded her second RBI of the day to score sophomore Vicky McFarland. Castro followed with a single to score Johnson.
Castro recorded a team-high three hits and three RBIs on the day. Johnson stole her conference leading 34th base. She came into the today’s contests with a steal per game average of .89 -- second in all of Division I.
UAlbany will head back to the Capital District to play crosstown rival Siena in a doubleheader in Loudonville, N.Y. on Tuesday, April 30. The Great Danes defeated Siena, 3-0, on April 4, 2013.
