UAlbany Women's Tennis Travels to Quinnipiac On Sunday

Albany, N.Y. -- The University at Albany women's tennis team are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 17 as they travel to Quinnipiac University in West Point, N.Y. Match time is set for 2 p.m. Sunday will be the start of a four match road-stand for the Lady Danes. They’ve kicked off the 2013 spring season strong, improving to 2-1, after a home win over Fairfield, 5-2, on Thursday.

Scouting Quinnipiac  
The Bobcats will open up their 2013 dual season against the Great Danes on Sunday. Quinnipiac won their NEC-opener and
only dual match of the 2012-13 season on Oct. 13, 2012. They defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) in a shutout, 7-0. The Bobcats have won six NEC titles since 2004 and advanced to the NEC Tournament championship match in 12 of the last 13 seasons. They are led by senior’s Sarah Viebrock and Rachel Cantor and were tabbed second in the NEC Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

A Pair of Undefeated Great Danes  
The Great Danes have won two of their first three opening dual matches behind the rackets of freshman Cat Crummey and junior Rocio Lopez. Both are 3-0 in singles play to start 2013. Crummey clinched both match wins at the No. 4 singles spot. Lopez has rotated between the No. 2 and No. 3 singles position.

No. 3 Doubles Shine in Bubble
The No. 3 double's team, senior Sarah Iannone and sophomore Fran White, had their best match of the season against Fairfield on Thursday. A make-up match played in the University bubble, the two defeated their Stag opponents, 8-6. It was the duo's first win of the season and sparked momentum for the Great Danes.

World-Ranked Spaniard Takes Talent to UAlbany
Head coach Gordon Graham announced the signing of Irene Santos-Bravo for the team's upcoming spring season. Santos-Bravo, a globally-recognized singles player, has ranked as high as No. 18 in Spain and No. 443 in the world by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA). Santos-Bravo will look to slot into the No. 1 singles role for the Great Danes. She debuted for UAlbany at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Jan. 18.

No Place(s) Like Home 
UAlbany will split time at three different locations for home matches this season. These include Tri-City Fitness, 944 New Loudon Road, Latham, N.Y.; SPORTIME, 2699 Curry Road, Schenectady, N.Y. and Varsity Court on the University campus. Matches will be at the specified location on the following dates. Tri-City Fitness: Feb. 1, Feb. 10 and March 13; SPORTIME: Feb. 9 (rescheduled for University bubble), March 3 and March 9; Varsity Court: April 5 and April 7. View the entire spring schedule.

New Year; Same Faces 
UAlbany returns five of seven players from last season. They are led by Lopez who will play No. 2 singles for the Great Danes this season. They also return sophomores Cheryl KukkonenKirsten Scott,  White and Iannone. Lopez was selected as the 2011-12 Team MVP and also honored to the America East All-Conference First Team. She claimed UAlbany's best record in both singles and doubles, 12-5 and 15-4, respectively.

2013 Redemption 
UAlbany will look to improve on their 2012 finish. The Great Danes fell in the first round of the 2012 America East Tournament to Stony Brook, 4-0. They defeated Hartford, 4-0, in the consolation bracket. The team prepped in the fall season at three collegiate tournaments including the Brown Indoor InvitationalMiddlebury Invitational and Cornell Invitational.

Up Next For UAlbany
The Great Danes will travel to Dartmouth, Fordham and Cornell to close out the month. They return home to play Rhode Island on March 3 at Sportime. Match time is set for 11:00 a.m.
