Albany, N.Y. -- The University at Albany women’s tennis team continued their 2013 dual season on Sunday when they hosted Providence College at Tri-City Fitness. The Great Danes proved to be a challenge for the Big East opponent, losing 5-2. Rocio Lopez and Cat Crummey both recorded their second consecutive singles victory. Four of the six singles matches ended in a UAlbany victory or were decided in three sets.
UAlbany (1-1) triumphed at the No. 1 doubles position to open up play. Lopez and teammate Kirsten Scott defeated Marisela Aviles-Duron and Maria Clara Bernardez, 8-3. The Great Danes dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches as the Friars won the first match point.
In singles play, UAlbany took home victories at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles spots. Crummey, a freshman, continues to impress. She put together her second two set victory, defeating Taylor Corder, 6-4, 7-5. Lopez was the only Great Dane to sweep her matches. She won at the No. 3 position over Alan Prinos, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Both Scott and Mireille Hermans took their Providence (6-1) opponents to three sets. Scott came within one point of winning at the top singles spot – she was defeated 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (0). Hermans loss was the match clincher for the Friars. She was defeated 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
“This was a great college tennis match with everything you could want except a win for the home team,” said head coach Gordon Graham. “This team can accomplish a lot this season by competing like this going forward. We are going to improve on the practice courts, and we will get more healthy, too. I feel good about what lies ahead for this season.”
The Great Danes are still without former world-ranked tennis standout Irene Santos-Bravo. She will be UAlbany’s No. 1 singles player upon her return. Graham expects her back to the courts this week.
UAlbany has set a make-up date and location for Saturday’s postponed match against Fairfield University. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, Feb 14 at 3 p.m. inside the University bubble.
