Men's Basketball Draws Fairfield In ESPN BracketBuster
ALBANY, N.Y. -The University at Albany (17-7) will play the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Fairfield University (13-10), for the first time in program history, in ESPN's Ramada Worldwide BracketBuster on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Bridgeport, Conn at Webster Bank Arena at Harbor yard.
"We are looking forward to the challenge of playing Fairfield, who I feel is one of the best programs in the MAAC," said Coach Brown on UAlbany's BracketBuster matchup. "They are well coached and have an outstanding point guard in Derek Needham. They have a nice mix of veteran and young talent. We will learn as much as we can about Fairfield in a very short period of time."
This is the fifth time the Great Danes have been featured in the BracketBuster and are 1-3 all-time. The four previous opponents that head coach Will Brown and the men's basketball squad has faced were Virginia Commonwealth on Feb. 17, 2006 (L, 70-67), Boise State on Feb. 16, 2007 (L, 83-82), Canisius (L, 64-60) and Rider on Feb. 18, 2012 (W, 70-61).
Fairfield, from the MAAC, is 13-10 overall and 5-6 in conference play. Sydney Johnson is the head coach for Fairfield and is in his second season. Johnson in his first stint as head coach brought the Stags to the MAAC Championship game and to the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com tournament. Senior guard Derek Needham leads Fairfield in scoring with 14.4 points and his second in assists with 3.3 a game this season.
The Great Danes have four league games before playing the Stags, beginning with UMBC on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the RAC Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
