Box score

ALBANY, N.Y. - Junior College transfer Gary Johnson came off the bench and recorded a career-best 12 points and five rebounds but it was not enough as the University at Albany fell to Stony Brook, 65-49, on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes look ahead to Binghamton on Saturday, Feb. 2 at SEFCU Arena for the Big Purple Growl.

UAlbany (16-7, 5-4 America East) was paced by redshirt-freshman guard Peter Hooley, who tallied 17 points, five rebounds and three assists in the contest. Johnson chipped in as the only other player to reach double-digits with a career-best 12 points. As a team, the Great Danes shot 78.6 percent (11-15) from the free-throw line and forced nine Seawolf turnovers.

Stony Brook (16-5, 7-1 America East) had four players in double-figures with freshman forward Jameel Warney leading the squad with the lone double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Seawolf catalyst Tommy Brenton stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists.

UAlbany and Stony Brook played even through the first nine minutes of the game. UAlbany was able to grab a two-point lead, 16-14, with 11:39 left in the half as Johnson grabbed an offensive rebound and finished strong with the put back.

Then the Seawolves went on 15-2 run for their highest lead in the first half at 11, 29-18, with 4:00 minutes remaining. Brenton led the squad with six late points to help extend the lead.

The Great Danes managed to cut the deficit to five, 34-29, before the end of the half. A three-point play by Hooley sparked the 11-5 run and was followed by two three-point plays, both of which came at the hands of Johnson.

The second half belonged to Stony Brook, as UAlbany was unable to cut the deficit under double-digits for the remainder of the contest. Hooley looked to lead the squad with nine points in the second half, but it would not be enough.
