Men's Basketball Looks To Make It Four Straight Vs. St. Francis
The Starting Five
1. State Supremacy
UAlbany faces its third of four consecutive non-conference New York schools on Wednesday, Dec. 5 against St. Francis (Brooklyn) at the SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes have already defeated Staten Island's Wagner (66-63) and Loudonville's Siena College (69-56). Following St. Francis, UAlbany will head to Hamilton, N.Y. to face Colgate for the fourth and final non-conference NY team. The Great Danes are currently 4-0 all-time against the St. Francis Terriers and 2-0 in SEFCU. Tip-off set for 7 p.m.
2. Danes Bring Albany Cup Back Home
In a battle for Albany Cup between UAlbany and Siena, UAlbany finished victorious with an impressive 13-point, 69-56, win on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Times Union Center in front of 10,229 fans. Even with a rough shooting night between senior guards Mike Black and Jacob Iati, the Great Danes found much success from role players Sam Rowley (8pts, 6 rebs), Peter Hooley (8pts, 4 rebs, 3 assists) and big men John Puk (9pts, 8rebs) and Blake Metcalf (8pts, 2rebs, 1block).
3. UAlbany's Iron Man
Senior center Blake Metcalf, since his first game as a freshman vs. Syracuse (11/9/09), has played in every UAlbany game up to this point. He played in all 32 games freshman year, all 32 sophomore year, all 34 games junior year (established himself as starter), and all eight games this season. So for all of you keeping track at home, Metcalf has played in 106 consecutive games.
4. A Homely-Feeling December
Even though UAlbany went 5-2 in the month of November having traveled 6768 miles and played six games in 12 day, the Great Danes will have a chance to use the month of December to recharge their traveling batteries. In the seven games, UAlbany will have to travel just 944 miles (720 round trip to Navy) while playing four games in the SEFCU Arena.
5. Cracking The Mid-Major Top-25
For the second time in program history, UAlbany men's basketball cracked the College Insider Mid-Major Top-25 poll on Monday, Dec. 2 ranked 25th with 61 votes. The last time UAlbany was placed in the mid-major top-25 was on Nov. 8, 2006, following its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
UAlbany is off to its best start in Division I with a 6-2 record through the first eight games.
