PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University at Albany women’s tennis team sent six players to Brown University over the weekend for the fall-season ending Brown Indoor Invitational. The Great Danes played a total of 19 singles and doubles matches against Brown and Ohio State. UAlbany was blanked over the two-day tournament as the Buckeyes and Brown Bears showed their might.

On Friday, sophomore Cheryl Kukkonen battled Brown senior Misia Krasowski in Flight 1 singles competition. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Kukkonen tallied two games in the second set. In Flight 4 singles, senior Sarah Iannone also won two games in the second set, losing to Brown’s Olivia Hsu, 6-0, 6-2. In doubles play, freshman Mireille Hermans teamed up with sophomore Francine White in Flight 2 competition. They were defeated in a competitive match against Brown’s Hsu and Ammu Mandalap, 8-4.

Freshman Cat Crummey highlighted Saturday, winning a total of six games. Crummey battled Ohio State’s Noelle Malley in Flight 3 singles competition, losing 6-1, 6-2. She then teamed up with Hermans in a Flight 2 doubles matched against Malley and Kelsey Becker of Ohio State. The Great Dane duo was defeated, 8-3.

Elsewhere in competition, White won two games in Flight 4 singles on Friday against Brown’s Nimita Uberoi. She was defeated 8-2. Kukkonen was defeated, 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday in Flight 2 singles by Ohio State’s Kara Cecil.

"The Brown tournament was a great experience to compete against two teams that finished last year in the nation's Top 65," said coach Gordon Graham"Playing strong competition helps you raise your level of play and I certainly saw that from our players.  So, from motivational, experiential and educational perspectives this weekend was excellent. It helps our team only continue to improve heading into spring conference play.”

UAlbany will spend the remainder of the fall semester practicing and conditioning in preparation for spring dual matches. They will look to improve on last season’s 10-13 record.
