New Hampshire Edges UAlbany In Penalty Kicks

Box Score

ALBANY, N.Y. - In an America East Conference Quarterfinal battle between New Hampshire and UAlbany, it would take more than 110 minutes of play to decide the match. With both teams locked after four penalty kicks through five regulation kicks, New Hampshire's Robert Palumbo would tally the game-winning PK to advance the Wildcats over UAlbany, 0-0 (5-4 in PKs), after six shots on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The Great Danes finish the season 6-11-1 overall and 3-4 in the conference. UAlbany's three wins in conference play were its most conference wins since 2008.

As both teams were unable to score through 110 minutes of play, the match was moved to penalty kicks. UAlbany (6-11-1) opened up the PKs with senior midfielder Jeff Pierre. Pierre's shot was low and to the left, but UNH goalkeeper Travis Worra came up with the save.

New Hampshire (5-7-5) began its penalty kicks with midfielder Jordan Thomas. Thomas sent his shot past UAlbany goalkeeper Tim Allen to grab the first lead.

The Great Danes responded with four consecutive makes by defender Christoffer Nisser, forward Brandon Wilson, midfielder Anthony Rozzano, and forward Quintel Gates. Allen would make one of four saves to tie up the penalty kicks at four a piece.

UAlbany sent in midfielder Pomare Te Anau for its sixth kick. Te Anau shot a liner to the right side, but Worra came up with a kick save to keep the PKs at four.

The Wildcats final penalty kick taker was defender Robert Palumbo. Palumbo lined up and sent a rocket past goalkeeper Allen for the game-winning penalty kick. Palumbo's game-winner sends New Hampshire in to the conference semifinals against Vermont on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Virtue Field.

Neither team had a solid opportunity on offense, as both defenses played perfect games through 110 minutes of play. The Wildcats held a slight edge in shots, 9-4, and in corner kicks, 6-5.

UAlbany goalkeeper Tim Allen recorded his third career shutout, making all three saves in the match. New Hampshire goalkeeper Travis Worra did not tally a save through the 110 minutes of the match.
