HARTFORD, CT – With an America East Conference postseason bid on the line, the University at Albany men’s soccer team defeated the University of Hartford, 1-0, on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Al-Marzook Field. UAlbany clinched a first round home match in the conference tournament off senior Quintel Gates' overtime goal.

The first half was a defensive battle with neither team finding the back of the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Allen had two key saves for the Great Danes to keep the game even. Hartford (7-9-1, 1-5-1 AE) strung together four corner kicks while UAlbany (6-11, 3-4 AE) had two in the first 45 minutes.

The stalemate continued into the second half, as again both teams failed to score. Allen was pivotal to Great Danes with three more saves. UAlbany sophomore midfielder Pomare Te Anau tallied two shots before overtime. Hartford had ten shots against UAlbany in regulation including four in the final 15 minutes.

If the tie held, UAlbany was now only two 10 minute overtime periods away from the America East playoffs. In the 117th minute, the Great Danes solidified that statement. Gates scored on a breakaway goal to not only officially clinch the purple and gold into the postseason, but give them a home match.

Allen's five saves were a game-high. He finishes 3-4 in conference play this season. Hawks goalie Viltsu Tuumi had three saves. Hartford was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

The Great Danes will host New Hampshire in the first round of the America East Tournament at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3. The match will be played at the Christian Plumeri Sports Complex.
