ALBANY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2012) – Five members of the University at Albany women’s tennis team were in action this weekend as they continue prepping for spring season dual matches. The Great Danes participated in singles and doubles competition at the Middlebury College Invitational, their second of three invitationals this fall, while sophomore Cheryl Kukkonen played at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships.

The weekend’s highlight was Saturday in Middlebury when UAlbany won two of three matches against crosstown rival Siena College in first round backdraw competition. Senior Sarah Iannone defeated her opponent Erika Reagan, 8-1, before teaming up with freshman Mireille Hermans for an 8-5 team-clinching doubles victory. Hermans dropped her singles match, 8-6, against Siena opponent Carly Holloway.

The Great Danes put together two more wins before concluding the invitational. Iannone won again on Saturday nearly shutting out Army College opponent Merian Kiser, 6-0, 6-1. The Great Danes were defeated by Army, 2-1, in the semifinal backdraws. Freshman Cathryn Crummey finished the last match of Sunday’s consolation round with an 8-3 victory over Middlebury’s Blake Harries.

Kukkonen was the lone representative for the Great Danes in the ITA Northeast Regionals. She faced off against Hofstra’s Sarah Bowen and was defeated, 6-3, 6-1.

UAlbany takes the week off before hitting the round once again for the Brown University Indoor Invitational on Friday, Nov. 2. Brown will be the final stop for the Great Danes before concluding their fall season.
