Jones started his season at the Spring Classic where he placed second in the 200m run and second in he 4x100m relay. He continued his season by placing first in th 400m run at both the Northeast Challenge and th America East Outdoor Championships.
Personal Best Marks
Jones opened the outdoor season setting a new personal-best in the 400m of 47.32 to take third place at the Spring Break Classic in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He also placed second as a member of the men’s 4x400m relay team, which set a season-best time of 3:13.90. Jones recorded a split of 48.6. At the Raleigh Relays, Jones placed 13th in the 400m in 48.42, and second as a member of the 4x400m relay team that finished in 3:14.05. Jones split 48.5. Jones placed second in the 400m at Connecticut’s Northeast Challenge, finishing in 49.37. He also won as a member of the UAlbany 4x400m relay, finishing in 3:23.59. He won the 4x400m relay again at UAlbany’s Spring Classic, where his team finished in 3:27.09. Jones recorded a split of 48.7. He also ran his first 200m of the season at this meet, finishing second with a wind-aided 22.12. Making the trip to the Penn Relays, Jones ran the 400m leg in the college division of the distance medley relay. The team finished 13th overall in 10:06.68, and Jones split 48.4. At America East Outdoor Championships, Jones won the 400m in 47.35 (47.64 in trials), placed second as a member of the 4x100m relay in 41.56, and placed seventh in the 200m in 22.44 (21.89 in trials). Jones ended the season at IC4A Outdoor Championships. He placed sixth in the 400m in 47.66 (47.69 in trials), and placed fifth as a member of the 4x100m relay team that recorded a time of 42.02 (41.30 in trials).
Jones was elected to serve as team captain before the indoor season. He competed exclusively in at the 400m distance, either in the open race or in the 4x400m relay. He opened the season with an eighth place finish in the 400m at the Nittany Lion Challenge, finishing in 49.71. At Cornell’s Upstate Challenge, Jones placed third in the 400m in 49.60 (48.83 conversion), and split 50.1 in the third place finishing 4x400m relay. He placed eighth in both the 400m and the 4x400m relay at the Armory Track Invitational, running 48.52 in the open race and splitting 49.4 in the relay. At Boston University’s Valentine Invitational, Jones set an indoor best time in the open 400m of 47.71 to place seventh overall At the America East Indoor Championships, Jones placed first in the 400m in 48.37 and earned second place as a member of the UAlbany 4x400m relay, which finished in a season-best time of 3:15.34. Jones split 49.2. His season came to an end at IC4A Indoor Championships, where he qualified for finals of the 400m in third place in 47.81, and ultimately finished seventh overall with a time of 48.04 in the finals.
During the outdoor season, Jones exclusively ran 400m, either in the open event or in the 4x400m relay. In his first meet, the Spring Break Classic, Jones placed ninth in the open 400m in 48.70, and first in the 4x400m relay, splitting 48.5. The relay team finished in 3:11.51. At the Dogfight against Connecticut, which featured cold temperatures and high winds, Jones was third in the 400m in 50.20, and first in the 4x400m, splitting 51.0. Jones ran a 48.75 at the Upstate Classic to finish second in the open 400m. Jones was second again in the 400m at the UAlbany Spring Classic, finishing in 49.22. He earned another victory in the 4x400m relay at the same meet. Jones ran as part of the 4x400m at the Penn Relays, where the team finished in 3:13.94. At the America East Outdoor Championships, Jones ran a 48.31 in the preliminary round of the 400m, qualifying for finals in second. In the finals, Jones placed first in a season-best time of 48.16. He earned a second America East title in the 4x400m, with the team finishing in 3:16.23. Jones ran 48.22 in the preliminary round of the 400m at IC4A Championships, placing 14th overall. He also ran the 4x400m, qualified for finals in seventh place. The team ran a season-best time of 3:11.00, and Jones split 47.7.
Jones ran his first ever collegiate 500m in the first meet of the season, the Penn State Indoor Relays. He finished seventh with a time of 1:05.38. He also ran on the 4x400m relay team that placed fourth in 3:19.43. At UAlbany’s Great Dane Classic, Jones placed eighth in the 400m in 48.86, and third in the 4x400m in 3:16.92. Jones ran the 500m again at Cornell’s Upstate Challenge, improving on his previous time with a 1:05.08. He also placed first as a member of the 4x400m that ran 3:19.91. Jones ran his first 200m of the season at the Columbia Invitational, placing sixth with a time of 22.33. His 4x400m team placed second in 3:16.89. At the Armory Collegiate Invitational, Jones ran a season-best in the 400m, placing 14th in 48.46. His 4x400m team placed second in 3:15.98. Jones competed in the 4x400m at the Millrose Games, where his team placed second in 3:16.91. At the America East Indoor Championships, Jones loaded up with three events, the 200m, 400m, and 4x400m. He set a season-best in the preliminary round of the 200m, qualifying sixth in 22.26. He would go on to place fourth in the finals in 22.31. In the 400m, Jones qualified for finals in third place with a 49.05, and then placed first in the finals in 48.60. His 4x400m relay, his team place first in 3:16.27. At IC4A Championships, Jones placed 18th in the 400m in 48.70, and placed 11th in the 4x400m in a season-best time of 3:15.22. Jones split 48.6 in the race.
Jones ran the ninth-fastest outdoor 200m in school history at 21.85, and the fourth-fastest outdoor 400m, at 47.35 in his inaugural outdoor season at UAlbany. He opened the season placing third at the Spring Break Classic in the 400m, recording a time of 48.86. He was a member of the victorious 4x400m relay team at the same meet. The next meet, the UCF Invitational, saw Jones run 21.85 for first place in the 200m, as well as claim another victory in the 4x400m. Jones won the 400m at the UConn Men’s Dogfight in 48.68. Jones competed at Penn Relays in the 4x200m relay, where his team qualified for the final round. At the America East Outdoor Championships, Jones earned victories in the 400m, running 47.35, and the 4x400m relay. IC4A’s saw Jones place 17th in the 400m with a 47.79, and 13th in the 4x400m in UAlbany’s fastest time of the season. Jones concluded his season competing at the NCAA East Preliminaries, where he ran 47.70.
Despite only being a freshman, Jones ran his way into the record books, sharing the fifth-fastest indoor 400m time in school history with alumnus Alie Beauvais at 48.36. In addition to being a prominent member of the 4x400m relay team, Jones earned top-10 finishes in the 400m at the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge and the UAlbany Great Dane Classic to open the season. He ran his fastest 200m at the Boston University Terrier Classic. At the America East Indoor Championships, Jones placed third in the 400m in 48.94, and seventh in the 200m in 22.73. After conference championships, Jones competed on the victorious 4x200m relay team at the Millrose Games. Jones placed 12th in the 400m in 48.36 at IC4A’s and was a member of the fifth-place 4x400m relay team.
Jones was a four-year letter-winner in track and field at Kingston High School. He was named team captain in both his junior and senior years. He finished second at indoor states in the 300m and outdoor states in the 400m in his senior year. In 2012, Jones was named Kingston High School’s Male Athlete of the Year.
Taariq Jones is the son of Tawanda Jones. He has three brothers, Kenny, Ray Ray, and Reggie, and one sister, Diamond.
