Orono, Maine- Gerardo Suero recorded his fifth 20-plus point performance with 28 points and added six assists to lead UAlbany over Maine, 76-68, on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Harold Alfond Sports Arena. The Great Danes improve to 8-6 in the conference while the Black Bears fall to 5-8. With the win, UAlbany will lock up at least the number four seed in the conference with a loss by Hartford in its next four games.
Suero led the Great Danes with 28 points on 11-of-22 shooting from the floor along with 6 assists. Both Mike Black and Luke Devlin each contributed with double-digits points as well with 11 and 13, respectively. UAlbany out rebounded Maine by a margin of eight, 35-27.
Fraser led the Black Bears with 21 points, 14 of which came in the first half. McLemore, Maine's leading scorer, coming into the contest averaging 17.7 points per game, was held to 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Of McLemore's 19, 11 came in the last minutes of the game. Maine out shot UAlbany, 52.9 to 45.3 percent from the floor.
After a slow start, UAlbany went on a 12-0 run in the first half to grab a seven-point lead, 21-14, with 9:12 left in the first half. The run was capped by a Luke Devlin three from the left baseline.
Maine's Fraser would stop the bleeding with an eight-footer to cut the deficit to five, 21-16, with 8:28 remaining. Fraser would end the half with 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field.
The Great Danes would finish out the half with an 11-point lead, 36-25. Suero would lead his team in scoring with 10 points.
UAlbany would continue to build on its lead by going up 15, 53-38, at 10:30 remaining which was the largest lead of the game. Suero opened up with six points during that stretch in the beginning of the second half.
Maine's McLemore would do his best to cut the deficit down to eight, 59-51, with a deep three at 4:28 remaining in the game.
But the Great Danes defense would be too much by holding on to the lead without allowing the Black Bears to get any closer than eight points in the final four minutes of play. UAlbany will continue the 2011-12 season against Vermont at SEFCU Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 15 (7 pm).
