West Hartford, Conn.- Logan Aronhalt led the Great Danes with 17 points and helped UAlbany over Hartford, 72-60, on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Chase Family Arena. The Great Danes win ended a three-game losing streak in the arena and improved their record to 14-9 overall and 6-3 in the America East while the Hawks fall to 4-17 overall and 4-5 in the conference. UAlbany ended the game on a 16-0 run in the last five minutes of the game.
Aronhalt led the Great Danes with 17 points on 4-of-8 shooting and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Gerardo Suero's 14 points and Mike Black's 10 points were the other two UAlbany players in double-digits. Nine Great Danes figured in the contest with at least one bucket. UAlbany outshot Hartford, 55.6-44.1, and outrebounded, 35-22.
Andres Torres had a game-high 18 points on 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. The Hawks only other player in double-digits was Mark Nwakamma with 12 points and four rebounds.
UAlbany came out in the first half playing some great defense grabbing the early lead, 19-10, with 9:51 left in the first. Suero led the Great Danes off the bench with seven points, hitting a three to cap the lead.
Hartford climbed right back into the first half to cut the deficit, 23-20, with 7:28 left in the first half. Torres led the hawks during the run with five points.
The Great Danes would go on an 8-0 run and finish off the half with a four-point lead, 31-27. Suero and Black would have 19 of the 31 total UAlbany points. The Great Danes would outshoot the Hawks, 46.2-42.3 percent from the floor.
UAlbany would begin the second half on a 12-6 run to go ahead by nine, 43-34, with 14:45 left in the game. Aronhalt would go 4-of-4 from the free throw line during the run.
Hartford would have its largest lead of the game late in the second half of four points, 60-56, with 5:02 remaining in the game. The lead was obtained by two three's by Nate Sikma and one by Torres.
The Great Danes defense wouldn't allow a single basket for the next five minutes while going on a 16-0 run. Momentum was gained with Aronhalt hitting a 12-footer and a three-pointer. UAlbany continues its 2011-12 schedule with a three-game home stand that begins on Wednesday, Feb. 1 against UMBC in SEFCU Arena.
