Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced on Tuesday, Aug. 17 that Zach Morton has been awarded the Capital District Student Scholarship, sponsored by New York Giants Football, Inc. and UAlbany.
Morton, a freshman on the UAlbany football team, was chosen to the Class A all-state second team by the New York State Sportswriters Association as a senior at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School. He led the Spartans to the 2009 state championship game, a 12-1 record, and the No. 4 ranking in the final statewide poll. Morton, at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, was also one of Section II's top basketball scorers at 16.9 points per game.
A consensus All-Area defensive end, Morton was honored by the Albany Times Union, Daily Gazette and Troy Record. He was named Class A Northwest Division Co-Defensive Player of the Year after accounting for 48 tackles, including 14 hits for a loss, six sacks and two blocked punts.
On the scholastic level, Morton was a member of the National Honor Society and Math Honor Society. He plans to study biology as a pre-med or physical therapy student. His parents are David and Sandra Morton. He has two sisters, Sarah and Lizzy.
"It is an honor to be able to come to a Division I school, play football and also get an education," Morton said. "It is special, especially from the Giants, too, and having their name on the scholarship is really neat."
The Capital District Student Scholarship provides Morton with a monetary award equivalent to the tuition costs of four years at the University at Albany. The Giants are training on the UAlbany campus for a record-setting 15th consecutive summer.
