Conway,
S.C. – Dock Doyle homered twice and drove in five runs to power No. 18 Coastal
Carolina to a 17-4 victory over UAlbany on Sunday, March 23 in the final game
of a weekend series at Watson Stadium.
Coastal Carolina (18-4) scored in each of the first
four innings of the game to jump out to a 14-1 lead. Doyle accounted for both
runs in the first inning by driving in Adam Rice with a single up the middle
and later coming around on a fielding error.
UAlbany (4-14-1) cut the deficit to
2-1 in the top of the second. Senior Mike Konstanty led off the frame with a
single. After advancing to third on a single by junior Sean Donovan and a wild
pitch, Konstanty scored as senior Tom Zink hit into a double play.
The Chanticleers responded with
three runs in the second, five in the third and four in the fourth. David
Sappelt keyed the second inning with a two-run double down the left field line
and later tallied a run on a sacrifice by David Anderson. Following
back-to-back walks to start the third inning, Sappelt blasted a three-run homer
to right field to give Coastal Carolina an 8-1 lead. After a strikeout, Doyle
and Anderson connected for consecutive home runs around a UAlbany pitching
change. In the fourth frame, Doyle gave the Chanticleers a 14-1 advantage with
a three-run blast.
Coastal Carolina registered its final three runs in
the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch, a balk and a run-scoring
single by Cody Wheeler. The Great Danes plated three runs of their own with two
outs in the top of the ninth inning. Freshman Jamie Liebowitz drove in
classmate Nate Touissant with a single to right field. Following a single by
freshman Jim Gaudet, junior center fielder Dave West knocked in Liebowitz with
a single through the left side. Junior designated hitter Ryan drove in the
final run of the contest with a single to center to bring in Gaudet.
Junior Nate Novak recorded his
fourth loss of the season, allowing nine runs on seven hits in two and
one-third innings. Dan Lombardozzi picked up his first win of the season for
the Chanticleers, striking out six over five innings, while allowing just one
run on two hits.
West and Konstanty each connected
for two hits for the Great Danes. Doyle and Sappelt had identical lines for the
Chanticleers, with each recording three hits, five RBI and three runs scored.
UAlbany returns to action in Greensboro, N.C.
on Tuesday, March 25 against UNC Greensboro at 6:00 p.m.
