Eddie Delaney Among Eight UAlbany Players Named to Phil Steele's Preseason All-NEC Squad
Cleveland, Ohio. - University at Albany's Eddie Delaney leads a group of eight Great Danes named to Phil Steele Publication's preseason All-Northeast Conference football squad. Delaney, a senior defensive end, wide receiver/punt returner Ryan Kirchner, safety Jake Ciccarello and punter Paul Layton were chosen to the first team. Herb Glass, a senior placekicker, tailback/kick returner Dillon Romain and inside linebackers Dave Plungas and Jon Morgan were picked to the second team.
Delaney, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound defender, earned second-team all-conference honors for the second time as a collegian last season. He totaled 41 tackles, including 4.5 hits for a loss. Delaney made 30 or more tackles for the third year in row on a defense that ranked second among the NEC leaders against the run.
Kirchner recorded the fifth-best single-season total in program history with 50 receptions for 504 yards and one touchdown. He was first among NEC punt returners with a 10.4 average and was third on the team in all-purpose yards at 71.3 per game. Ciccarello tied for third among Great Dane defenders with 51 tackles. He added two interceptions and two pass break-ups. Layton averaged 40.1 yards per punt as a redshirt freshman. He was 31st among the national leaders and third in the conference.
Glass led UAlbany in scoring for the second consecutive season with 52 points. He is among the school's all-time scoring leaders with 164 points, plus is second in career field goals (26) and fourth in point-after attempts (86). Plungas and Morgan were one-two on the team in tackles from their linebacker positions. Plungas made 71 stops, including 30 unassisted. After moving from outside to inside, Morgan had 54 tackles and scored on a fumble return for the second time as a collegian. Romain, the 2010 NEC Offensive Rookie of the Year, rushed for 547 yards and six touchdowns, plus averaged 86.7 all-purpose yards per game. He was 32nd among the FCS national leaders with a 25.1 kickoff return average.
Paw Prints: UAlbany was chosen to win the 2011 Northeast Conference championship by Athlon Sports, a national publication ... The Sporting News and Lindy's Sports Annuals picked the Great Danes to finish third in their preseason rankings ... UAlbany begins preseason camp on Monday, Aug. 8 ... the Great Danes open their schedule on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Colgate ... the Great Danes have posted a program-record five consecutive winning campaigns ... the NEC champion earns an automatic NCAA Division I FCS playoff berth.
