University at Albany Names Patrick Hairston Associate Athletic Director for NCAA Compliance

Albany, N.Y. - University at Albany Vice President and Director of Athletics Lee McElroy announced on Tuesday, Dec. 6 the hiring of Patrick Hairston as associate director of athletics for NCAA compliance. He previously worked as an assistant athletics director at West Virginia University.
     In his role at West Virginia, Hairston managed the daily operations of the athletics compliance office and provided written and verbal interpretations for NCAA and Big East Conference rules and legislation. He conducted rules education seminars for coaches and athletic staff members. In addition, Hairston managed the process for updating the department's policies and procedures. He also served as an adjunct assistant professor as he taught undergraduate classes in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Management, plus coordinated the college's sports management internship program.
     Prior to that appointment, Hairston worked at the National Collegiate Athletic Association for one year as assistant director of championships. He served as a manager for selected governing sports committees, including ice hockey, men's soccer, men's tennis and men's and women's rifle, administered championships and managed selected coaches' associations and selected national governing bodies.
     From 2005-08, Hairston was Delaware State University's associate athletics director for internal operations. His responsibilities were related to sport supervision, facility planning and development, game operations, compliance matters and the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.
     For a six-year period starting in 1999, Hairston served as an assistant commissioner for compliance and governance of the Western Athletic Conference. He worked closely with WAC member institutions in the areas of compliance, NCAA Certification, secondary and major NCAA rules violations, plus conducted compliance reviews and audits. Hairston oversaw the National Letter of Intent Program, Coaches Certification Test Program, the conference's Student-Athlete Special Assistance and Student-Athlete Opportunity Funds, and crafted amendments to NCAA and conference legislation. He was the primary liaison for the WAC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and to the Faculty Athletic Representatives.
     Hairston worked as compliance coordinator and athletics academic advisor at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi University for one year. He held an NCAA internship with regard to enforcement and eligibility and was a West Virginia graduate assistant in compliance. He was also a marketing intern with the National Football League's Carolina Panthers.
     Hairston has been involved with numerous NCAA committees during his career. He has served on the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison, Division I Amateurism Fact-Finding and Athletics Certification Peer Review committees. Hairston has also worked with Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and Amateurism Certification Clearinghouse Advisory Group.
     A native of Williamson, W.Va., Hairston holds a bachelor's degree in human services from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a master's in sport management from West Virginia. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in educational administration with an emphasis in leadership and supervision from Delaware State. He and his wife, Vanessa, have two children, Patrick, Jr. and Faith.
