VESTAL, N.Y. - Chelsea DeVerna scored for the third consecutive America East Conference match, which was the game-winner for UAlbany over Binghamton, 1-0, on Thursday, Oct. 4. The senior midfielder has now scored four of the Great Danes six goals in conference play.
UAlbany goalkeeper Alana Brennan recorded her first career clean sheet, saving the only opportunity Binghamton put on net in the 80th minute. Bearcat goalkeeper Carrie Martin, who is second in the conference in goals against average (0.75), made two saves on three chances in the match.
With the match scoreless in the first half, UAlbany's (5-7-1, 2-1 America East) Chelsea DeVerna wasted no time in scoring the match's first goal in the 49th minute. Twin sister Maggie DeVerna began the play by dribbling the ball down into Binghamton's half of the field. M. DeVerna then fed a cross to teammate Shayla Bergeron, who found Chelsea DeVerna open just outside the box to give the Great Danes the 1-0 lead.
Binghamton (6-6-1, 0-3-1 America East) began to find its chances late in the half. In the 80th minute, Bearcat forward Candice Rowland struck the first shot on net for Binghamton but was saved by Brennan. Then in the 85th minute, two shots, one by Connie Gormley and the other by Rebecca Raber, both struck the crossbar but would not find the back of the net.
UAlbany would hold onto the lead for the final five minutes. Binghamton held the advantage in shots, 9-7 for the game and both teams would have just one corner kick for the match.
The Great Danes look to carry its success, continuing on the road against Hartford on Sunday, Oct. 7.
