Baseball Loses to St. John's, 13-6, in Home Opener; Josh Nethaway Has Two Hits & Two RBIs

Albany, N.Y. - Second baseman Matt Wessinger went 5-for-6 with two runs scored to lead St. John's to a 13-6 win over UAlbany in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Varsity Field.

            St. John's scored two runs in the top of the first and added five in the third, taking advantage of three UAlbany fielding errors in the third frame to hold a 7-0 lead after two and a half. The Great Danes responded with one run in the bottom of the third. Jeff Welsh led of with a triple into right field and came home on a ground out by Josy Espinal. The Red Storm added an additional run in the top of the fifth to hold an 8-1 advantage. Joe Panik knocked an RBI double down the right field line in the seventh to extend the St. John's lead.

            UAlbany then put two runs on the board in the seventh and three in the eighth to attempt a late rally. In the seventh, Josh Nethaway led off with a single and the Great Danes got two on board with a walk issued to Jeff Welsh. The baserunners advanced on a passed ball before Rob Cervini recorded an RBI groundout that scored Nethaway. Joe Ilacqua then put up a sacrifice fly that scored Welsh, pulling the Great Danes to within 9-3. UAlbany tacked on three more runs in the eighth, as Pete DiResta and Greg Muller hit two straight doubles. Later in the inning, Nethaway drove a double to left center to send two more runs home.

            Miguel Valcarcel made quick work of the UAlbany order in the bottom of the ninth getting three straight outs to seal up the win for the Red Storm. Ryan White took the loss for the Great Danes on the mound, striking out two but allowing seven runs over three innings of work. UAlbany used six pitchers throughout the rest of the game, getting two strikeouts apiece from Matt Dybus and Austin Chase.

            UAlbany (5-13) will return to action over the weekend, with games slated against Massachusetts and Fordham in the Bronx on Saturday and Sunday.
