Albany, N.Y.- Junior sprinter Jonathan Santana is looking to become UAlbany's second track and field Olympian in the school's history. He helped his cause last weekend running for the Dominican Republic team in the 4x400 meter relay at the 2012 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships at Paralympic Track Stadium in Irapuato, Mexico.

Santana helped win the bronze medal in the 4x400-meter relay for the Dominican Republic team with a time of 3.07.80. He ran his fastest split of 45.6 and second fastest time in UAlbany history behind Joe Greene (45.0). His mark of 45.6 was the fastest of the Dominican Republic 4x400-meter relay squad.

The only other UAlbany track and field athlete to have reached the Olympics was Robert Caracciolo. He represented the Equatorial Guinea in the 2004 Athens Olympics in the 1500 meter.

The two other former UAlbany student-athletes that have competed in the Olympics were Andy Seras, who competed in the 149.5-pound Greco-Roman wrestling group in the 1988 Seoul Olympics for Team USA. Shawn Sheldon competed in the 114.5-pound Greco-Roman wrestling group in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics for Team USA.

Santana will find out later this week if he will be chosen to compete in the 2012 London Olympics for the Dominican Republic National Team.
