Former Great Dane standout Amy Nicklin has returned to the Capital District to serve as an assistant coach for the UAlbany field hockey team starting in the 2017 season.

“I’d like to thank Phil (Sykes) and Andy (Thornton) for this opportunity, and as a UAlbany field hockey alum, I am really excited to be rejoining such a strong program,” said Nicklin. “I’m looking forward to working with a great group of players and building on the success that the team has had in recent years.

“We are very excited to have Amy as our new assistant coach,” said UAlbany head coach Phil Sykes. “She was a very good player for us and captained our 2014 Final Four team.  As a coach, she has a true passion for the game and educates in a fun way that brings both pride and joy to the team.  We are lucky to have her, and we are excited for the 2017 season.”

As a player, Nicklin was the team captain of the 2014 squad that was the first women’s program in SUNY history to reach a Division I Final Four.  A two-year starting defender, she played in 76 career games, earning America East All-Conference Second Team and NCAA All-Tournament Team honors in 2014.  She had 25 career points, including two goals and six assists as a defender in her senior year.  Nicklin was part of the 2012 and 2014 America East Tournament title teams.
