The University at Albany named Pete Iorizzo as assistant athletic director/media relations on Wednesday.

Athletic Director, Mark Benson, welcomed him to UAlbany.  "We are extremely excited to have Pete Iorizzo to lead the Great Danes Media Relations team.  His extensive background as a sports writer, columnist and sports editor of the region's leading newspaper will play an integral role, as we find new ways to tell the story of our amazing student-athletes."  Benson continued, "The delivery of media is constantly changing.  We feel that Pete will help put us in the forefront of this area in college athletics.  To say the least, we are very excited to have him as part of our team."

Iorizzo, 35, comes to UAlbany from the Times Union, where he has worked since 2005 as an editor, reporter and columnist. He's served as the Times Union's sports editor for the past five years.

“I'm very excited to join a department with a winning tradition, exceptional student-athletes and an accomplished staff,” Iorizzo said. “After having covered many of the Great Danes' successes as a journalist, I'm grateful for the opportunity to continue telling the UAlbany story, now as part of the team. I can't wait to get to work.”

As the Times Union's sports editor, Iorizzo led a team of reporters consistently honored by the Associated Press Sports Editors. Iorizzo was honored by the APSE for column writing in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Previously, Iorizzo had been a reporter and mostly covered college sports, including several of UAlbany's America East championships. He also has covered New York Giants training camp and the Giants' victory in Super Bowl XLVI.

Before joining the Times Union, Iorizzo worked for the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello, Idaho, where he covered high school and college sports. He graduated from Syracuse University in 2004.

He and his wife, Mary Jane, reside in Clifton Park with their son.
