UAlbany Women’s Lacrosse Announces 2017 Schedule, Will Play Three 2016 NCAA Final Four Teams
ALBANY, N.Y. – The UAlbany women’s lacrosse team will be battle-tested in 2017, releasing its regular season schedule, including three of last year’s NCAA Tournament semifinalists.
UAlbany’s 2017 schedule includes six contests against 2016 NCAA Tournament participants, four matchups against reigning league champions and a full America East slate. Among the opponents include 2016 NCAA champion North Carolina and national tournament semifinalists Syracuse and Penn State.
“We look to challenge ourselves once again, playing three Final Four teams early in our schedule,” said UAlbany head coach John Battaglino. “These games will put us under pressure and demand us to think.”
The team will play six home games, including five on campus at John Fallon Field.
Battaglino returns for his seventh season as the head coach at UAlbany. In his first six years, the Great Danes have combined to go 81-26, including double digit wins each season.
“These games are opportunities to compete and bring our best at the highest level while developing as a team,” said Battaglino. “I look forward to the competition.”
Last year, UAlbany finished second in the America East at 5-1 in league play and 11-6 overall, falling on a last second shot by Stony Brook in the league title game. The Great Danes return a pair of IWLCA All-Region players in Dakotah Savitcheff and Sarah Martin, the team’s top two scorers from 2016.
UAlbany starts the year in the Keystone State, playing Penn State on Saturday, February 4th at noon. It is the first time the Great Danes take on the Big Ten member since 2011, an 8-7 victory en route to UAlbany’s undefeated regular season that year.
After an away scrimmage at Harvard on February 9th, UAlbany will have its first home game on Monday, February 13th, taking on St. Bonaventure at noon in the Adirondack Sports Complex in Queensbury.
The team’s first home game at John Fallon Field is on Saturday, February 18th against Yale at 3 p.m.
UAlbany’s next two games will be against the remaining two 2016 NCAA semifinalists. The Great Danes head west for the battle in the Carrier Dome on Monday, February 27th at 5 p.m. Then on Friday, March 3rd, the team will play a neutral site game against defending NCAA and ACC champion North Carolina at 3 p.m. at the new US Lacrosse headquarters outside Baltimore.
The following two games will see the Great Danes take on a pair of reigning league champions in the home state. On Thursday, March 9th, the team heads to Staten Island to take on Northeast Conference champion Wagner, coached by former UAlbany assistant Katie Rowan. Then on Wednesday, March 15th, the Great Danes go to Ithaca to play Ivy League champion and NCAA Second Round participant Cornell at 5 p.m.
The Great Danes return to John Fallon Field for a non-conference matinee against Drexel on Sunday, March 19th at noon.
America East play begins on Saturday, March 25th at home with a noon contest against UMBC. UAlbany has won its conference opener each of the last four years.
A rematch of the 2016 America East title game will commence on Sunday, April 2nd as UAlbany takes on rival Stony Brook on Long Island at 12 p.m.
UAlbany comes back home for a league game against Vermont on Wednesday, April 5th at 3 p.m. Conference play continues on the road on Saturday, April 8th against UMass Lowell at 11 a.m. on the blue turf in Massachusetts.
The team’s final regular season home game will be Saturday, April 15th at noon against New Hampshire.
UAlbany wraps up the regular season with two more road contests, a non-conference tilt at Dartmouth on Wednesday, April 19th at 3 p.m. and the final America East game on Saturday, April 29th at 1 p.m. at Binghamton.
The 2017 America East Tournament will be hosted by the conference’s regular season champion. The tournament semifinals will be on Friday, May 5th, with the title game being on Sunday, May 7th.
