Last Two America East Champions Meet as UAlbany Menís Basketball Visits Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y.The UAlbany men’s basketball team, the America East Tournament champion from 2013-15, and Stony Brook, the 2016 league champion, will play the first of two conference matchups this season on Sunday, January 8th at 2 p.m. at the IFCU Arena.

The game will be broadcast online on AE on ESPN3.  In addition, Zach Bye will have the radio call on 104.5 the Team in the Albany area.

UAlbany is playing its second of two road games to begin America East play on Sunday, with its conference home opener set for Wednesday, January 11th vs. New Hampshire.

UAlbany fell in its conference opener for the first time in seven seasons on Thursday at UMass Lowell 85-79 to stand at 0-1 in the league and 9-7 overall.  Stony Brook won a road contest at New Hampshire 59-56 on Thursday to begin at 1-0 in the America East and 6-8 overall.

Splitting last year’s regular season series, UAlbany ended Stony Brook’s 18-game winning streak last season with an 82-70 victory at home on Feburary 17, 2016.  Including the pre-DI era, UAlbany leads the all-time series 41-28; in the America East era. Stony Brook leads 21-16.  UAlbany has won four of the last six meetings, including the America East title games in 2014 at Stony Brook and 2015 at the SEFCU Arena.

UAlbany stands 7-1 against New York-based teams this year.

THE DYNAMIC DUO: Joe Cremo and David Nichols had been a strong scoring pair this season, with each standing in the top-10 in the America East.  Between the two, they have 12 20+ point games and a combined 28 double digit scoring contests this season.

SAME STARTING FIVE: UAlbany has played the same starting five in 15 out of 16 games this season.  Joe Cremo, Marqueese Grayson, David Nichols, Mike Rowley and Greig Stire have been the starters in all but one game this year.

BOX OUT!: UAlbany is 10th in all of Division I in rebounding margin, averaging 9.6 rebounds more than their opponents.  It is almost more than two rebounds more per game than New Hampshire, second in the league.

All told, UAlbany has outrebounded its opponents in 12 out of 16 games and has only once been outrebounded by more than three in a game.  UAlbany is 8-4 this season when it has more rebounds than its opponent.

Mike Rowley and Greig Stire, who have started every game this year, each average over six rebounds per contest for top-10 in the America East.

WILL BROWN APPROACHING 250 WINS AT UALBANY: Into his 16th season with the team, Will Brown is just two wins away from 250 as the head coach at UAlbany.  He stands with a career record of 248-231, including five America East Tournament titles and seven seasons with at least 19 victories.

The longest active tenured coach in the league, Brown ranks fourth all-time in victories as coach of an America East.  He is one victory away from tying for third with Dennis Wolff, who had 249 victories with Boston University from 1995 to 2009. 

PLAY IN THE PAINT, NOT THE PERIMETER: UAlbany stands with the second-best three-point field goal defense percentage in the America East, holding teams to 34.9% from behind the arc.

In addition, UAlbany has taken the least amount of shots from three-point range in the America East.  After 16 games played, UAlbany has taken 226 shots from three, 75 less than the next conference team (Vermont, 301).  UAlbany averages 14.1 three-point attempts a game, over four less than any other America East team per contest.

SIX WINNING LEAGUE SEASONS IN A ROW: UAlbany has earned a winning record in America East play each of the past six seasons starting in the 2010-11 year, including a combined 28-4 tally from 2015-16.  UAlbany has earned nine winning seasons in America East play in the last 11 under Will Brown.

SCOUTING STONY BROOK: Stony Brook is coached by Jeff Boals in his first season at the helm.  The team’s top scorer and three-point threat at 37.5% is senior guard Lucas Woodhouse at 13.3 points per game.  Standing seventh in the league in rebounding, junior forward Tyrell Sturdivant averages 11.8 points and 6.4 boards per game.
