UAlbany women’s basketball head coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee has announced that AJ Cohen has joined the team as an assistant coach for the Great Danes.
Cohen comes to UAlbany after serving under Bernabei-McNamee at Pikeville as the graduate assistant coach for two years. He also was the assistant to video coordinator and practice player for over two years for the University of Louisville women’s basketball team under head coach Jeff Walz.
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to join Coach McNamee and the staff here at UAlbany. The winning culture and tremendous support from the university make it a very special program to be a part of,” said Cohen. “I greatly appreciate Coach Walz and the entire coaching staff at the University of Louisville for allowing me to pursue my career in coaching and learn from the best. I am eager to hit the ground running and contribute to the established success here at UAlbany!”
“AJ has a tireless work ethic and is wise beyond his years, spending the past two seasons working with me building a top nationally ranked program while learning my system and style,” said Bernabei-McNamee. “His enjoyable personality allows him to be a good recruiter and his positive energy on the court is well received by the players. AJ is extremely accountable and he puts the needs of the team and our players first. His passion for basketball and ultimate success shines through in everything he does. He is a great fit for UAlbany!”
Cohen served at the University of Pikeville as the graduate assistant coach from August 2014 to June 2016. Helping the Bears to the program’s first-ever NAIA Fab Four in 2016, Cohen assisted with film exchange, opponent scouting, game day preparation and daily practice plans. He also served as the co-head coach of the junior varsity team.
At Louisville, Cohen served in multiple capacities as an undergraduate. He helped with opponent scouting breakdown and filming home games as the assistant to video coordinator and was a male practice player to help with scouting purposes.
Since April 2015, Cohen has served as an assistant coach of the All-Ohio Black EYBL Women’s Basketball program, which has included 2015 USA U16 National Team players. He develops practice plans and helps with implementation of playing strategies.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Cohen graduated from Louisville in December of 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in marketing. He is currently working on his MBA.
