Vermont Defeats UAlbany, 70-45, On Saturday

BURLINGTON, Vt. - A physically-tough Vermont defense held the University at Albany to 45 points, as the Great Danes fell 70-45 to the Catamounts on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Patrick Gymnasium. The loss puts UAlbany at 1-1 in America East Conference play, while Vermont improves to 2-0 in league play.

UAlbany (12-4, 1-1 America East) senior guard Mike Black paced the Great Danes with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting and four rebounds. DJ Evans and Sam Rowley came off the bench, scoring a combined 15 points and tallying nine rebounds. As a team, the Great Danes shot 35.7 percent (15-42) from the floor.

The Catamounts went into the half with a 16-point lead, 35-19, which was led by a suffocating defense. Vermont caused 10 turnovers in the first half that led to 10 of its 35 points. Apfeld led all scorers with 10 points.

Vermont (9-5, 2-0 America East) took its momentum into the second half to extend the lead to as high as 21, 45-24, with 17:03 left in the game. Candon Rusin paced the Catamounts with 10 of his total 12 points in the beginning of the half.

The Great Danes looked to cut the deficit, as Evans hit two free throws then a three-pointer and a Black three-pointer, to 23, 61-38, with 7:33 left in the contest.

However, UAlbany could not get any closer to the Vermont lead, falling in Burlington by 25, 70-45.

The Great Danes look ahead to Binghamton on Monday, Jan. 7 at Vestal, N.Y. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with tip-off scheduled at 7 p.m.
