Position: Assistant Coach

Matt Jones enters his eighth season as an assistant coach of the Great Dane track and field program and his third as head coach of the cross country program. He has been involved in track and field and cross country development for three decades in the Capital Region.  Jones is responsible for coaching the middle distance runners who primarily compete in the 800-meter run, the 1,000, 1,500 and the mile. He also works with the 4x800-meter relay team as well as the distance medley relay.

Jones was named the 2010 Division I Indoor Track Northeast Region Men's Assistant Track Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). His men's athletes amassed 55 points at the America East meet and scored an additional 26 at IC4As in leading UAlbany to the team titles. Jones mentored Tyler Fogarty, who won the mile at the IC4A meet, and John Moore, the America East 1,000-meter champion. The distance medley relay was victorious at the America East championship, while the 4x800-meter relay helped seal the IC4A title by rallying to win on Moore's final leg. Outdoors, Jones' men's athletes won titles in all three events he oversees and accumulated 39 points at the America East championship, while school records were established in three relays. Sean Halpin was named a Junior National All-American by placing sixth in the 1,500 at the USA Junior National Championships.

UAlbany's middle distance group had its most prolific year in 2008-09. School records were set in seven of the 16 events he oversees. The men's 4x800-meter relay clinched both the IC4A indoor and outdoor team titles, eclipsing program standards in the process, and Aaron Lozier, Fogarty and Moore were all America East individual champions.

Four individuals have won seven America East titles during Jones' three years, while the 4x800 and distance medley relay squads have placed first four times. In addition, the UAlbany middle distance program has produced 22 all-conference selections, eight IC4A and ECAC qualifiers, two NCAA East Regional and Preliminary Round qualifiers, two USATF Junior National All-Americans and several relays which have competed in IC4A and ECAC competitions.

Jones most recently served as the Athletic Director/Director of Physical Education for the Shenendehowa School District from 1997-2007. During his tenure, he saw eight relay teams and two individuals in three events win a track and field national championship. The school's 2004 boys' 4x1-mile relay squad still holds the indoor national record of 17:25.97, and the outdoor distance medley relay team won a championship at Penn Relays that same year. He also coached four athletes who qualified for the Millrose Games, including Dan McManamon, who won the overall title in 2006.

Jones was previously a member of the New York State High School Track & Field Committee and served as the Section II Indoor Track & Field Chairman. He earned an associate's degree in physical education from Hudson Valley Community College, a bachelor's degree in physical education from SUNY-Cortland, a master's in physical education and curriculum instruction from Castleton State and his School Administrator Supervisor degree from North Adams State College. The veteran coach was inducted into the HVCC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.

Jones and his wife, Cathy, reside in Clifton Park. They have three sons, Chris, Nick and Ryan.
