Field Hockey Announces Captain and Vice Captains for 2014 Season
ALBANY, N.Y.- University at Albany field hockey head coach Phil Sykes announced Monday that four seniors have been selected to lead the Great Danes in 2014. Amy Nicklin will serve as captain, while Kelly Bonner, Echo Bretz and Jordyn Homyak will be vice captains.
“Our captains will represent our team in a very positive fashion this year,” said Sykes. “We have several team goals we want to reach and they will be a great extension of the coaching staff’s voice.”
Nicklin enters 2014 as captain after starting all 21 games for the Purple & Gold in the midfield last season. She was an America East All-Rookie pick in 2011, and has made 53 career appearances. The senior is also a two-time NFHCA All-Academic Squad honoree.
Bonner returns for her senior campaign ranking tied for third among returners in points last season. The forward scored eight goals to go with three assists in 2013. She has made 39 career appearances after transferring from Old Dominion.
Bretz opened 2013 by scoring in seven of the first 13 games, and ranks tied for third in points among returners along with Bonner. The senior forward will continue to add depth to the offense, having made 21 appearances and 15 starts last season. She was also an America East All-Rookie selection her freshman season.
Homyak, a two-time vice captain, will anchor the defense for UAlbany in the absence of two-time All-America selection Corrine McConville. The senior defender has made 62 consecutive starts for UAlbany. A two-time NFHCA All-Academic Squad awardee, Homyak was also named to the America East All-Academic Team one season ago and the All-Rookie team in 2011.
UAlbany field hockey opens the season at home on Friday, Aug. 29 against Hofstra at 1:00 p.m.
