UAlbany To Host 2015 America East Outdoor Championships

ALBANY, N.Y. – Perhaps the biggest development for the University at Albany track program entering the 2014 outdoor season was not the men’s opportunity to win a 10th consecutive conference title, or the women’s chance to win their sixth consecutive, but the fact that the Danes would unveil a brand new, world class facility, allowing the program to once again host home meets.  Now, the University at Albany has been selected to host the 2015 America East Outdoor Championships, the first time the championship will be held at UAlbany in school history.

UAlbany was originally scheduled to host the conference championship in 2017, but were bumped up in the rotation due to construction at original 2015 host New Hampshire’s facilities, rendering the campus unable to host.  New Hampshire will now take UAlbany’s spot in 2017.

The new track, designed by former 800m champion Don Paige, is essentially the same track as exists at the University at Oregon in Eugene, where many national championships and Olympic trials are held.  The old track had seven 42” lanes, while the new one has nine 48” lanes on a Beynon surface.  The straightaways themselves are shorter, about 85 meters, and there are three shotgun extensions on the track, including one for the 1,500 start.  Both the javelin and the discus can be contested on the infield, and there is an additional throwing pit up by the softball field.  The high jump apron is large enough to run two pits at once, should the need arise.

UAlbany hosted three collegiate home meets on the new track this year, the first time Danes hosted a meet since 2011.  The first was the men’s Dogfight against Connecticut and the women’s dual meet against Colgate in early April.  Next, UAlbany hosted its own invitational in mid-April.  Finally, in mid-May, the Danes hosted a last chance meet before IC4A and ECAC Championships.  If that schedule holds for next year, the conference championships will add a fourth home meet for the Danes.  Additionally, the new facility played host to all five Section II High School Divisional Championships, as well as the Section II State Qualifier meet.

America East Outdoor Championships will run from May 2-3, 2015.
