Burek Breaks Two Program Records In America East Semifinal Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University at Albany women’s lacrosse senior attack Rachael Burek is leaving her mark before she finishes out her career, following a 13-6 win over New Hampshire in the America East Conference Semifinals on Friday, May 3 at LaValle Stadium. With her five total points, which included an assist, became the program’s record holder for most assists (50) and points(84) in a single season.

The first half of the America East Semifinals saw both Co-Rookie of the Year award winners shine. New Hampshire’s (6-11) Laura McHoul came out and scored the game’s first goal within five minutes.

The Great Danes’ Rachel Bowles retaliated with back-to-back goals to swing the lead back, 2-1, in their favor with 21:13 left in the first half. The redshirt- freshman dashed on the left side of the net and swiftly cut in front of the net both times to beat the UNH goalie.

Bowles’ scored her third goal of the game to extend the lead to two, 4-2. Then McHoul mimicked Bowles with her second goal of the game to cut the deficit to one, 4-3, with 3:02 remaining in the half.

With a 5-3 lead going into the second half, Allie Phelan facilitated a pass to Co-Player of the Year Burek for her first goal of the game a minute and 27 seconds in.

The Wildcats refused to go away, scoring two of the next three goals to bring the game within two, 7-5, with 18:46 remaining in the contest. McHoul tallied her fourth point of the contest with an assist to teammate Nicole Grote and then was followed by Laura Puccia’s first goal.

UAlbany’s defense clamped down for the final 18 minutes and 45 seconds, allowing just one  goal. On the offense end, the Great Danes went on 6-1 run to finish out the contest with a seven-goal victory. During the run, Burek rattled off three goals with her final goal giving her five points on the day and 85 on the season to break the program’s previous record of 84 set by Taylor Frink in 2011.

The Great Dane goalie, Anna Berman, recorded four saves on 10 chances. Wildcat goalie Kathleen O’Keefe tallied three saves on 16 chances in the loss.

UAlbany advances to its third straight America East Tournament Finals, facing Stony Brook for the second consecutive time on Sunday, May 5 at LaValle Stadium. The game is slated for noon on ESPN3.
