Latham, N.Y. -- The University at Albany women's tennis started their 2013 spring season with a win after defeating Marist, 4-3, on Friday, Feb. 1 at Tri-City Fitness. The Great Danes clinched the victory off the racket of freshman Cat Crummey, in her dual match debut at the collegiate level. Friday was the first of 21 dual matches UAlbany will battle in throughout the next three months.

UAlbany (1-0) started strong taking two of three doubles points to go up 1-0 in the match. Playing in the No. 2 doubles position, Crummey and freshman Mireille Hermans won six straight games to take down Red Fox opponents Kaye Eastman and Melissa Carlay, 8-3. 2012 America East First Team selection, Rocio Lopez and her Great Dane teammate, sophomore Kirsten Scott, also rolled to victory in the No. 1 doubles spot. They defeated Kelsey Raynor and Joana Sun, 8-3.

After taking the first dual point, the Great Danes needed to win three of six singles matches to clinch the overall win. They did just that. Both Scott (No. 1 singles) and Lopez (No. 3 singles) showed their veteran leadership and took care of business. Scott defeated Raynor, 6-1, 3-2 (ret., inj.) and Lopez defeated Eastman, 6-0, 6-2. With UAlbany needing one more victory, Crummey clinched the match at the No. 4 position with a 6-3, 6-3 win. The dual victory came as redemption after Marist (0-1) beat the Great Danes, 4-3, last season.

"It was nice to get this win to start the season, and even sweeter beating a team that had beaten us last year," said head coach Gordon Graham. "We fought hard and had good energy, both of which helped carry us through. Our freshmen did a great job in their first college match. Cat [Crummey] and Mireille [Hermans] won crucial points for us."

Marist took three points, defeating sophomore Francine White, Hermans and senior Sarah Iannone. Hermans, at the No. 2 singles spot, took her match to a third set tie break, losing 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8). Iannone also played a tight match, losing 3-6, 5-7.

UAlbany will work with students of the youth tennis foundation program, 15-love, tomorrow from 1-4 p.m. in efforts to give back to the local community. They have two home matches matches slated for next weekend. They host Fairfield on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m. inside Sportime (Schenectady, N.Y.) and return to Tri-City Fitness (Latham, N.Y.) on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2:00 p.m. to host Providence.
