Men's Basketball Hosts Maine On Saturday
THE STARTING FIVE
1. The Middle Of The Road-Trip Sandwich
UAlbany comes back home to play Maine, having been on the road the previous two contests, on Saturday, Jan. 12 at SEFCU Arena. The America East Conference contest will be shown on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. As always, Rodger Wyland will have the play-by-play call and will be assisted by John Quattrocchi with the color analysis.
2. 100th Game Started
Senior Mike Black will start his 100th game in a Great Dane uniform against Maine on Saturday, Jan. 12. Black started his first game of his career at Syracuse on Nov. 9, 2009 in UAlbany's 2009-10 season opener. The Chicago, Ill. native has started in 76 consecutive Great Dane games, dating back to Nov. 28, 2010 versus Bowling Green.
3. Career Firsts
Aussies' sophomore forward Sam Rowley and redshirt-freshman guard Peter Hooley got the nod for their first career start on Monday, Jan. 7 vs. Binghamton and neither one wasted the opportunity. Rowley recorded the team's first double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Hooley filled the stat sheet with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, and one steal.
4. Rise Up Big Men
Through the first 16 games the Great Danes have been scouted to focus on the big-time shooters, Black and Jacob Iati, who are averaging a combined 30 points per game. However, UAlbany's fours and fives (forwards and centers) showed that the team is more than those two players. Of the 71 total points versus Binghamton, the team's fours and fives scored 48 points and shot an impressive 20-of-25 from the floor.
5. Assisting In Wins
Taking care of the ball has shown to be a vital key for the Great Danes to have as many wins as they do this season. UAlbany is 7-0 on the season when its assist-to-turnover ratio is +0 or better. The Great Danes highest asst/to ratio this season was at South Carolina State with a +10 (24 assists/ 10 turnovers)
