Cooper Leads Men’s Indoor with Heptathlon Win At Crowell Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior Sean Cooper served as one of the
Carlton Crowell Open's highlights Saturday at West Point, as he placed first in
the heptathlon with 4,720 points. Cooper, along with sophomore Alexander Bowen
and junior Alfonso Scannapieco paced the University at Albany men's indoor
track and field team in their first meet of the 2013 season.
Cooper's winning heptathlon performance included a first-place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.84, while
placing second in the high jump with a 6' 2" leap.
Junior Nick Mattera also contended in the seven-event
competition, placing third overall with a total of 4,355 points. Mattera took
first in pole vault with a 14' 5.75" mark. He also came in second in the 1,000m
run, recording a time of 2:52.76.
Bowen, a native of Beacon, N.Y., captured the high jump
victory with an IC4A-qualifying bound of 6' 10.75". Also topping the IC4A
standard in the first meet of the season was Scannapieco, recording a pole
vault mark of 15' 9".
Other highlights of the meet included Jonathan Santana's
third-place finish in the 500m with a 1:05.97 time. Teammate Charles Karam
finished narrowly behind with a fifth-place mark of 1:05.99.
In the first intercollegiate meet of his career, freshmen
Rudje Beckford earned sixth-place with an 8.59 time in the 60m hurdles,
followed by senior Shane Wagner's 8.60 mark.
Freshman Mark Thomas tied for sixth in the weight throw with
a 51' 6.25" toss, leading the Great Danes. Simon Cleary placed ninth in the
event with a 46' 6.75" throw.
UAlbany continues the 2013 season next weekend at the
Nittany Lion Challenge at Penn State.
