Women's Basketball Set to Participate in Long Beach Classic Tournament
THE STARTING FIVE
1. The Game
UAlbany is traveling to Long Beach, Calif. for the next two games of 2012 to take part in the Long Beach Classic Tournament. The Great Danes will face Sam Houston State in the first contest on Wednesday and either Long Beach or Canisius on Friday.
2. Scouting UAlbany
The Great Danes stand at 8-2 on the season, and are riding a six-game win streak, after defeating Delaware State, 79-57, last Saturday. UAlbany has beat their last six opponents by an average of 24.7 points. Center Megan Craig, who currently leads the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game, scored a career-high 27 points against Dartmouth, en route to earning her first America East Player of the Week honor. Two-time defending Defensive Player of the Year Ebone Henry has continued to show why she has earned that title, as she has recorded 25 steals, while also scoring at a 10.7 clip. Julie Forster chips in with 9.2 points and a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game, while Lindsey Lowrie adds 10.4 points, after scoring 21 points on seven 3-pointers at Canisius.
3. Scouting Sam Houston State
The Bearkats are 2-6 on the season, after falling to TCU in a closely contested 67-60 game on Sunday. Britni Martin has showed flashes of brilliance during non-conference play, averaging 15.6 points per game, while grabbing 4.4 boards. Sequeena Thomas has also been stellar, recording 12.7 points per game and 12.4 rebounds per contest.
4. Road Warriors
Tonight’s game is the fifth in a seven-game road stretch for the Great Danes that spans from Dec. 1 to Jan. 15. Over the course of the month and a half, UAlbany will travel over 8,260 miles, visiting Philadelphia, Buffalo, Dover, Del., Long Beach, Calif., Baltimore, and Binghamton.
5. Youngsters on the Rise
Freshman Shereesha Richards has won back-to-back America East Rookie of the Week awards. She claimed her first after scoring 17 points, while also recording four rebounds, three steals, one assist, and one block to lead the Great Danes over La Salle. Richards then earned her second honor of the season after scoring a team-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, grabbing eight rebounds and recording four steals in a win over Delaware State.
