Men’s Purple Overcomes Gold In Season’s First Test

In the 19th Annual Intrasquad Meet, the Purple men’s team overcame Gold, 84-54, in a 13-event competition at SEFCU Arena Saturday. In addition, the combined men’s and women’s Purple team won, 150-122. The friendly marked the squad’s first competition of the 2012-13 season.

Junior Donald Williams Jr. (6.47) narrowly edged seniors Taylor Chaney (6.49) and Jake Rachiele (6.50) in the 55-meter dash, marking one of the many close races on the day.

Freshman Taariq Jones (35.87) and senior Charles Karam (35,97) placed first and second, respectively for the Purple team in the 300-meter dash. Karam earned the win in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:06.66, while sophomore Ryan Small (1:06.83) took second.

Senior Ryan Florkiewicz earned Purple five points with a 9:04.49 mark in the 3000-meter run, good for first.

Gold team member junior Elijah Pardo used a time of 7.81 to win the 55-meter hurdles event.

In the field, sophomore Alexander Bowen Jr. broke the facility high jump record with a 2.16-meter mark (7-01.00 ft.). Junior Alfonso Scannapieco placed first in pole vault with a best of 4.58 meters (15-00.25 ft.).

A close competition between senior Kadeem Howell (23-07.25 ft.) and junior Kareem Morris (23-06.75 ft.) at the long jump pit ended with a narrow victory for Howell.

Former University of Kentucky Wildcat Steve Crouse placed first in triple jump with a leap of 15.02 meters (49-03.50 ft.).

Freshman Mark Thomas earned Purple five points each with a 13.13-meter (43-01.00 ft.) shot put throw and 14.88-meter (48-10.00 ft.) weight throw, while senior Simon Cleary redeemed five for Gold with a 40.61-meter (133-03 ft.) discus throw mark. Freshman Adam Dickert won the javelin event with a 50.69-meter (166-04 ft.) toss.

The Great Danes will compete in their first intercollegiate meet January 4-5 at West Point.
