The University at Albany track and field program, headed by director Roberto Vives in his  28th year at the helm, will kick off the indoor season with its 19th Annual Intrasquad Meet this weekend on UAlbany’s campus.

“We are excited about our meet,” said Vives. “Our team has really worked hard this preseason and is ready for a great start to the indoor season.  I feel we have a tremendous group of young men and young ladies who are capable of bringing our program to new heights.”

The squad, split into a Purple Team and Gold Team, will compete against each other using a scoring system as follows: 1st place = 5 points, 2nd place = 3 points, 3rd place = 2 points, 4th place = 1 point. The clash will take place in the SEFCU Arena with some field events occurring in the nearby Bubble.

The intrasquad meet will mark the first competition for the record 40 first-year student-athletes that joined the Great Danes' program for the 2012-13 academic year. UAlbany will use the friendly to ready the team for its first intercollegiate meet of the season, the Carlton Crowell Open at West Point, on Jan. 4-5.

Having won 26 track and field conference championships in a 10-year span, UAlbany looks to continue its proven success this year. The Great Danes come off a strong spring season, winning the America East men’s and women’s outdoor championships for the fourth consecutive year. In addition, men’s indoor has won nine of the last 10 conference titles, including the last seven straight, while the women have won two indoor America East titles in the last three years.
