ALBANY, N.Y. -- Emily Valeo scored the gamewinner in double overtime, leading #18 Lafayette to a 2-1 victory over #21 UAlbany in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Turf Field. The Great Danes drop to 3-5 overall, while Lafayette improves to 6-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first half, UAlbany got on the scoreboard first, capitalizing on a penalty corner opportunity. In the 45th minute, Jessica Longstreth passed the ball out to Laura Page, who stopped the pass for Fiori Van Rijswijk, who sent a shot straight into the back of the cage. The Great Danes held onto the 1-0 lead for just over 11 minutes, before Lafayette converted a penalty corner attempt of its own. Jenna Seybert scored the equalizer for the Leopards, taking assists from Emily Valeo and Deanna DiCroce.
The two teams played the first 15-minute overtime period with neither team finding the back of the cage, despite UAlbany holding a 5-1 advantage in shots and getting four penalty corner opportunities. Lafayette finally ended the game just 1:26 into the second overtime, as Valeo carried the ball in towards the cage from the left, and slipped the ball into the bottom right corner of the cage past UAlbany goalkeeper Kristi Troch.
The Great Danes outshot Lafayette, 10-7, and held an 8-4 advantage in penalty corners. Troch made three saves in a complete-game effort, while Jessica Deutsch stopped five shots for the Leopards.
