EAST LANSING, MICH. -- UAlbany won the second set, and pushed the third to extra points, but Georgia prevailed for a 3-1 win over the Great Danes in non-conference volleyball action on the first day of the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Inviational at Michigan State's Jenison Field House on Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs recorded set scores of 25-14, 21-25, 26-24 and 25-19 for the match win.
Dunja Prgomet led the Great Danes with 13 kills on .286 hitting, while also recording eight digs and three blocks. Sara Pope added 12 kills, while Traci Vandegrift was the third player in double-digit kills for UAlbany with 13. Libero Viktoriia Stroilo finished with a match-high 31 digs, while setter Sofia Furlong totaled 33 assists, seven digs and two blocks. The Great Danes out-blocked Georgia, 12-10, led by seven total blocks by Gabby Whitworth and five blocks by Vandegrift.
Tirah Le'au paced Georgia (6-1) with 19 kills on .484 hitting. Chloe Buckendahl finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 17 digs, while Lauren Teknipp also recorded 12 digs. Maggie Baumert and Kaylee Kehoe split setting duties, with 33 and 26, respectively. Baumert also finished with 14 digs and two of the Bulldogs' four service aces.
UAlbany (2-5) will return to action on Saturday, playing host Michigan State at 12 p.m. and IPFW at 5:30 p.m.
