Worcester, Mass.- A pair of goals by forwards Quintel Gates and Brandon Wilson in the first half gave UAlbany the win over Holy Cross, 2-1, on Thursday, August 16 at Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium. The Great Danes will wrap up their preseason camp with its final exhibition match on Monday, August 20 against St. Rose/Nyack at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
"It was good for the newcomers to get their first Division I experience and to get that confidence, especially when it comes with a positive result", said head coach Trevor Gorman on the exhibition match. "We are excited to continue to build on moving forward".
With the Great Danes holding onto most of the posession in the first half, Gates opened up the scoreless match with a goal from a thru-pass by teammate Pomare Te Anau in the 32nd minute. Wilson, a Troy, N.Y. native, then put his name on the score sheet with a goal of his own in the 44th minute from a corner kick by Te Anau and a touch in the box by Dominic McGarr.
The Crusader's would respond back in the second half in the 78th minute with a goal from defender Max Pettinelli. UAlbany would hold on to win its first of two exhibition matches before the regular season begins against Syracuse on Friday, August 24 at 7 pm.
