Men's Soccer Falls to UMass Lowell in AE Quarterfinal

Short Story: The University at Albany men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to UMass Lowell in the America East quarterfinal round.
Coach Gorman: “Season endings are always bittersweet. We did so many good things today in spite of so many injuries piling up. Our players really attacked and played with passion and purpose. In the playoffs though, one moment can be the difference and it doesn’t always go your way. This team has been so fun to work with and our only regret is that we don’t have a next game to prepare for.”

The University at Albany men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to fifth-seed UMass Lowell in the quarterfinals of the America East Tournament on Saturday. The defeat marked the second straight year that the Riverhawks have come out on top in the tournament quarterfinals against the Great Danes winning 1-0 in 2018.
In the first half, neither team was able to find the back of the net. Kaio DaSilva had two quick chances in the fifth and seventh minute, taking a shot that went low right and then low left that the UMass Lowell goalkeeper was able to make the saves. Niklas Roessler also came close in the 10th minute that missed right.
In the 31st minute, Andreas Assiotis had back-to-back chances, taking a shot that off a free kick that went right into the center of the UMass Lowell goal that the goalkeeper was able to make the save on. 10 seconds later off of a throw in, Assiotis took another shot that went low right that the goalkeeper was able to save.
UAlbany had five corner kick opportunities in the half, but were unable to score.
In the second half, the Great Danes kept the pressure on which led to a chance by Sam Philip in the 50th minute off a throw in that missed just high.
The Riverhawks scored their lone goal in the 63rd minute, when Alejandro Osorio was able to take advantage of a turnover by the Great Danes which led to an opportunity where he was able to beat Kennedy on a shot that went low left.
The Great Danes kept pushing the pace after the goal that led to chances by Philip and Bjarki Leósson, who both missed left in the 67th and 68th minute.
Anton Friberg came close to scoring the equalizer in the 83rd minute off a corner kick, but the shot missed high.
UAlbany’s 2019 campaign has come to an end. UMass Lowell advances to the America East semifinals to face top-seeded New Hampshire on Wednesday, November 13.
