Freshman Morgan Haney dropped 14 points and senior Alexi Schecter added 10 but the Great Danes women’s basketball team faltered against Cornell, 71-51, on Friday night in non-conference action.
Cornell’s Samantha Widmann notched a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Teammates Laura Bagwell-Katalinich and Kate Sermac added to the scoring with 11 points apiece.
UAlbany freshman Helene Haegerstrand tallied eight points and brought down two rebounds in her second collegiate appearance. Redshirt-junior Khepera Stokes posted nine points of her own and dished out three assists.
Cornell finished the night shooting 55.3% (31-56) from the floor. The Big Red took a 19-6 lead at the end of the first and entered halftime with a 35-21 advantage.
In the third, junior Patricia Conroy would knock down a triple to end a four-minute scoring drought for the Great Danes. Conroy shot 2-3 from behind the arc and totaled six points on the night.
Senior Kumsal Aslan, sophomore Lucia Decortes and freshman Taniya Hanner came off the bench for UAlbany in the fourth quarter. It was the first appearance of the season for both Aslan and Decortes and a collegiate debut for Hanner.
Up next: The Great Danes travel to Marist on Wednesday, Nov. 13 for their first road contest of the year. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the McCann Arena.
