UAlbany improves to 21-5 all-time against Vermont.
The No. 21 UAlbany field hockey team defeated Vermont on Friday afternoon in the squads’ 2019 America East opener.Katie MacCallum scored the game-winner in the 20th minute for a 2-1 win. The Great Danes improve to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play while Vermont falls to 4-6 and begins America East action 0-1.
Vermont took a 1-0 lead when Bailey Matthews sent a one-timer past the UAlbany defense and into the cage in the 3rd minute.
UAlbany’s adjustments showed in the second quarter. The Great Danes held a heavy 11-2 shot advantage in the corner and had a trio of penalty corners, while keeping the Catamounts out of the semicircle on the opposite side of the field.
MacCallum evened the score just minutes into the second frame when she knocked in a deflected shot from Dana Bozek. The junior struck again at 20:30 off a Great Dane penalty corner. After receiving a pass off the insert from Kelsey McCrudden, MacCallum was able to create space before firing a shot into the back of the cage.
The Great Danes and the Catamounts played a back-and-fourth battle in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, but neither team was able to penetrate the goal line.
The win marked the seventh-straight for the Great Danes.
