Coach Bochette: “We’re very happy to take all three points with us back to Albany. It’s never an easy task to come all the way down here and compete at our top level against a resilient and talented conference opponent. I think we showed a bit of resilience ourselves by continuing to attack and continuing to believe after hitting the post and crossbar four or five times. We know every America East game will pose a unique and difficult challenge and we’re thrilled to be coming away with maximum points from this challenge. We will aim to improve upon this match as we prepare to welcome another dangerous conference opponent to Casey Stadium on Thursday.”
In their first game on the road since September 8, the University at Albany women’s soccer team visited UMBC and defeated the Retrievers Sunday afternoon by a final score of 1-0.
The lone meeting between the teams in 2018 saw UAlbany outshoot UMBC 25-2 overall. That trend continued in the first half Sunday, with UAlbany outshooting the Retrievers 15-1. Despite the pressure, the Danes did not find the back of the net and went into the break locked at zero.
For the third-straight game, UAlbany drew a penalty kick. Gina Bracamonte, who had gone two-for-two on penalty kicks this season, saw her attempt saved by UMBC goalkeeper Jade Wilkins, who would finish the afternoon with 11 saves in net.
UMBC found its offensive rhythm after halftime, rolling off eight shots in the second 45 minutes. UAlbany maintained its pressure on the offensive end however, taking 11 shots of their own.
Jada Colbert broke through in the 83rd minute to break the scoreless tie and put UAlbany up 1-0. Colbert’s goal, her fourth of the season, moves her into a tie with twin sister Jasmine for the team lead, while Jada takes over sole possession of the team points lead, now with 10. The Retrievers managed just one additional shot following Colbert’s goal, saved by UAlbany goalkeeper Sophia Chen in the 84th minute.
UAlbany improves to 5-3-2 on the season and remains undefeated in the America East at 2-0-0. The Great Danes as a team are unbeaten with Chen in goal, now 5-0-2.
Up next: UAlbany returns to Casey Stadium on Thursday, October 3 to host unbeaten-in-conference Binghamton.
