Coach Bochette: “We’re thrilled to get the result.  It’s a really good, tough Central Connecticut team.  Their last time out they just tied UConn, and they took Rutgers to overtime earlier this year, so we have a lot of respect for Coach D’Arcy and their whole team.  They have a fantastic squad and they really pushed us as far as they could today.  We’re thrilled to play at home finally and put on a good result for our fans.  We had to dig in towards the end, and it was not easy, so there is still a lot we can learn from this.”

Recap

After a long road trip to open the season, the University at Albany women’s soccer team finally played a game at home, welcoming reigning Northeast Conference champion Central Connecticut State to Casey Stadium on Sunday.

During the road trip, the Great Danes dropped each of their games by one goal.  Sunday, UAlbany secured its first victory behind scoring efforts from Jada Colbert and Meghan Cavanaugh, knocking off the Blue Devils 2-1.

Colbert, who’s twin sister Jasmine scored both of UAlbany’s goals in the previous game against Army West Point, put the Great Danes on the board in the 33rd minute with a shot from the left side of the box after a long buildup from Cavanaugh and Sophea James, who pushed the ball up the right side from behind midfield before crossing it in to Colbert.

Cavanaugh struck shortly after halftime, breaking horizontally from the top left corner of the box through several Blue Devils defenders, before ripping a shot that found the far side netting past CCSU goalkeeper Amanda McQuillan to put UAlbany up 2-0.

CCSU drew a penalty kick in the 65th minute on a foul in the box.  Blue Devil Roma McLaughlin successfully converted her attempt against UAlbany goalkeeper Sophia Chen, who was making her season debut.

The Great Danes would hold on, preventing the Blue Devils from scoring an equalizer for the remainder of the game, taking their first victory of the season by a final score of 2-1.

Up next: UAlbany visits Buffalo on Sunday, September 8 at 12:00 p.m. before playing each of their next four at home.
