The University at Albany men’s soccer team came up short in a 3-2 battle against Kentucky in its season opener on Friday.
The game marked the first time meeting between the two teams, and both were evenly matched.
UAlbany had its first scoring opportunity of the night on a shot by Andreas Assiotis, but it was saved by the Wildcat goalkeeper.
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead after Aime Mabika was fouled in the box, and converted on a penalty kick in the 39th minute.
The Great Danes responded in the 59th minute of the second half, knotting the game up at one on a goal by Alex Bourgeois on their second corner kick of the night.
Kentucky took a 2-1 lead in the 74th minute of the second half on another penalty kick.
UAlbany responded quickly as Austin DaSilva scored his first goal as a Great Dane on a penalty kick in the 75th minute.
The Wildcats scored their third goal of the night in the 76th minute, and held on to win.
UAlbany will head to Cincinnati on Monday, and take on the Bearcats at 7 p.m.
