Recap

The University at Albany baseball team has extended its winning streak to five, taking both games in a doubleheader against Binghamton on Saturday.

The Great Danes needed just one inning in each of Saturday’s games, the top of the fourth in both game on and game two, to do their damage and clinch victory.

Trailing 1-0 in the first game after letting up a run to the Bearcats in the bottom of the third, Nick Kondo led off the top of the fourth with a single up the middle, and advanced to second when Travis Collins drew a walk.  Kondo stole third before Kevin Donati struck out.  Next, Marc Wangenstein hit a three-run home run to right giving UAlbany a 3-1 lead.  Neither team scored again and UAlbany claimed the early game victory.

Dominic Savino earned his third win in his last three appearances, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run, unearned, while striking out five and allowing no walks.  Opposite Savino, Binghamton starter Nick Gallagher, the 2017 America East Pitcher of the Year, lasted 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Binghamton brought to the mound Ben Anderson in the second game, the current America East leader in victories, ERA, and strikeouts.  UAlbany once again broke open the game in the top of the fourth inning, scoring four runs.

Patrick Lagravinese led off with a triple down the right-field line, his league-leading seventh of the season.  He scored two batters later when Brad Malm reached safely due to a fielding error by the Bearcats’ second baseman.  Next, Dolan Ocasal singled through the right side, putting runners on first and second for Matt Codispoti, who hit an RBI single to left, scoring Malm.  Kenny Hayden came to the plate, pinch-hitting for Josh Loeffler, and beat out a bunt single before advancing to second on an error by the pitcher which also allowed Ocasal to score.  Kondo next hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Codispoti and putting the Danes up 4-0.

Binghamton would put a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh but could not avoid the shutout.  Second game starter John Clayton lasted 5.2 innings, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.  In relief, Joe Kruszka pitched the final 1.1 innings, striking out three and allowing one hit.

In two games on Saturday, the Great Danes held Binghamton’s Alex Baratta, the America East leader in batting and on base percentage, to 0-6 at the plate with one walk.  The Great Danes have allowed just five runs during its five-game winning streak.

Next: UAlbany will look for the series sweep against Binghamton tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
